Different Types of Luggage and Accesories

There are many different types of luggage which have remained largely the same over the centuries, although the modern design techniques and the materials used have evolved over time. There are also many different luggage accessories that compliment the larger pieces and help people to find the perfect place for every item when they travel. Following are the various different types of luggage and luggage accessories that are generally available:

  • Duffel bag – This is one of the most common luggage accessories, which is often used for lighter travel such as overnight trips, and it resembles the bags that people often use for the gym. It is a small barrel shaped bag that is worn over the shoulder and there are also wheeled varieties.
  • Garment Bag – These luggage pieces fold over themselves to pack long garments such as suits or dresses without creasing them. Some Garment bags can have wheels and are often the largest piece of luggage in a set.
  • Wheeled Luggage – This generically refers to any luggage that has wheels, whether it has handles that pull out or not. Wheeled luggage might be upright with a handle that pulls out, a duffle bag with wheels on the bottom, or anything else that has wheels to allow for vertical movement.
  • Suitcase – This refers to any type of luggage that is solid and is not a bag. A suitcase may or may not have wheels and it might be hard or soft.
  • Tote – This is one of the smaller luggage accessories, which comes in the form of a small bag usually worn on the shoulder. There are also totes with wheels and extending handles, which are a new take on this old design.
  • Trunk – These luggage accessories have faded out of popularity for travel somewhat, although people have been using them for centuries. Trunks are typically large wooden boxes sometimes referred to as steamers and there are also smaller models known as footlockers. People use trunks more for storing things in their homes rather than for travel these days, since there are so many rolling luggage models which are more convenient to carry.
